Lai Thieu Campus: Teachers

Jamie Jones
Jamie Jones comes to us from Enterprise, Alabama. She worked her first year with us at our Hiep Thanh campus, and we welcome her as lead teacher at our Lai Thieu campus this year. She enjoys instilling a love for the English language and the Word of God to our youngest learners. Her experience working with children has been cultivated within children's ministry settings, caregiving positions, and within children's theater environments in which she's stage managed and directed several productions. Outside of the classroom, Jamie enjoys community theater, amusement parks, and board games.

Jeanette Kroft
Teacher Jeanette is now in her third year at the Lai Thieu campus. Originally from Spokane, Washington, she earned her Degree in Secondary Education with a focus in History from Grand Canyon University in 2024. Jeanette enjoys helping students work toward their dreams and discover God’s path for their future, and she is especially passionate about supporting teens and young adults. She incorporates hands-on activities in her history lessons to actively engage students and foster critical thinking. Additionally, Jeanette has led photography workshops for students interested in creative arts, sharing her enthusiasm for capturing moments and teaching others the fundamentals of photography. Outside the classroom, Jeanette loves taking her dog for walks and playing games with her family, further reflecting her commitment to joyful learning and community building. She is excited to continue inspiring students at Lai Thieu.
Heip Thanh Campus: Online Teachers

Teacher Michelle is an experienced office administrator and teacher. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from Regent University in 2012, with a special interest in cross-cultural communication. She enjoys helping everyone of any age learn English Language Arts with special tips to help them remember various grammar and spelling rules. Teacher Michelle lives in Georgia, USA, with her husband, mother-in-law, daughter, and two grandchildren. When she is not teaching, she enjoys many artistic endeavors, including singing, playing several musical instruments, quilting, knitting, and crocheting.

Kenda Gatewood
Hello, my name is Teacher Kenda, and I have the privilege of serving Newman International Academy #2 as the online social studies teacher for Grades 3, 4, and 5. The field of education has been a special and unique journey for 15 years now, partnering with a diversity of communities, students, families, and nations. During this time, I have taught grades K-5 in the role of a classroom teacher in the southern region of the United States. Just a short three years ago, the opportunity to serve and support a school abroad opened my eyes to the global impact of the Gospel and the desire to provide education through the lens and perspective of our Creator. I am so excited and grateful to be part of the work of the ministry through REAP International, and I pray our learners' curiosities will grow in awe of the many wonders of our Lord. May it be a continuous flame to be cultivated because His working through Newman International Academy.
I am a creative personality with a heart to meet, help, and serve people all across the globe. I love to teach, make music, and craft knitwear. I have a bright personality and adventurous spirit. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies with a Concentration in Global Missions from SUM Bible College and Theological Seminary in 2019. I currently am enrolled with the same school for my Master of Divinity. I hope to graduate next year. I have been working with REAP International for the past 3 school years. I previously worked as a Special Education Teacher for half a term at a local school for grades Kindergarten through the 3rd Grade. I currently teach at my local church in the children’s department to students aged 6 to 12 years. I am a creative person who loves to knit, crochet, play guitar, sing, and write music. Above all, I love spending time with my husband and children! My current roles include being the school administrator for our Schoology program, curriculum administrator for both 3P Learning, which is our Reading Eggs and Math Seeds programs, and for our Ignitia program. I also facilitate our email accounts through Google Workspace, as well as work as a teacher and “supersub”.

Christian Odom

Laura Stoughtenborough
Laura lives in a small town outside of Dayton Ohio in the United States of America, She received her Bachelor's of Science Degree in Nursing from Wright State University in 2002. She has held a career in Nursing for over 20 years in various departments in Pediatrics. She has taught and instructed new employees and students for many years. She also coachesthe varsity girls track and field team at the local high school near where she lives. She loves being with her family of her husband, son and daughter. She has two cats and one dog. Laura enjoys being outdoors and enjoys running and hiking. She is an avid reader. She loves traveling to the beach for vacation and scoping out new adventures. Laura will be teaching in Newman 2 this year as an online teacher for Language Arts. This will be her first year of online teaching.
Vanessa Freeman teaches 3rd-5th grade English at Newman #2. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies and is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity. Alongside academic studies, she serves as a youth leader and teaches 3rd grade Sunday school at her local church, combining a passion for ministry with a commitment to guiding the next generation in faith and learning.

Vanessa Freeman

Luis Pabon teaches 3rd–5th grade English at Newman #2. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies and is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity, bringing a thoughtful and values driven perspective to the classroom. In addition to his school role, Luis serves as a Sunday school teacher and ministry leader, experiences that have strengthened his skills in mentoring and engaging young learners.
Luis Pabon
My name is Tiffany Edwards -Raines. I am a dedicated family person, married with four wonderful children, and I hail from the vibrant city of Houston, Texas. With a passion for education, I earned a Doctorate and a Master's degree in Human Services, alongside a Bachelor's in Public Administration. My career spans over six years as a structural teacher, where I fostered a love for learning in my students. Currently, I work as a policy analyst, applying my academic knowledge to influence positive change in community programs. When I'm not immersed in policy work, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and exploring the great outdoors.

Tiffany Edwards - Raines

Chrystal Fretz
I live near Akron, Ohio, in the USA. I live with my husband, our son, and our two dogs. I have a Master's of Science degree in Geology. I teach science classes (Oceanography, Earth Science, and Environmental Science) at a university, and I also teach downhill skiing in the winter. This is my first year teaching online for Newman, where I am currently teaching ELA to 6th graders. I love teaching and helping people. When I'm not working, I love to go for hikes with my family, build Legos with my son, listen to music, tend my garden, and read lots of books.

Torrey McClean
Teacher Torrey has lived in quite a few different places. He grew up on the East Coast, primarily in Virginia and New England. He recently moved to Colorado from Ohio. As a lover of History, Teacher Torrey has a passion for learning about and discussing different aspects of historical periods and subjects of study. Outside of teaching he is an avid reader, enjoys writing historical fiction and fantasy stories, and being physically active. Teacher Torrey joined REAP International as an online teacher this year and supports students in their ICEV Courses at Newman 1 and is the 6/7th grade History teacher at Newman 2. He is also a teacher at Ascent Classical Academy Grand Junction. He is the new Upper School History teacher there. Teacher Torrey holds a BA in History from the University of Connecticut and an MA in Military History from Norwich University. He previously taught in Columbus City Schools as a High School ESL Social Studies teacher for grades 9-12.
COVID-19 Newman Policy Summary
Newman is carefully monitoring TEA requirements and is dedicated to the safety of students, parents, faculty, and staff. Please see the current policy of Newman International Academy below. Any updates will be immediately posted on the Newman website.

Masks will be optional for students, parents, visitors, faculty and staff.

Gloves will be optional for students, parents, visitors, faculty and staff.

Parents may instruct their child to wear a mask and/or gloves; however, Newman does not assume responsibility for ensuring that the child wears these items correctly at all times.

Screening for COVID-19 will be done as necessary and on a contingency basis.

Students may be required to maintain social distancing (6 feet apart). Faculty and staff will strive to follow all district requirements and best practices.

Online education options will be provided for students and families who do not prefer an in- person learning environment.
